Welcome, and thank you for visiting.
I am a hormone expert specialising in all aspects of the menstrual cycle, from your first period to your last and all the issues in between.
I trained with the Natural Family Planning Teachers’ Association and am a qualified Fertility Awareness Method Coach. I can help you with period tracking for fertility or avoiding pregnancy. Tracking is also very helpful in identifying any issues with your periods, which can be worked on before you decide to try to get pregnant.
Having spent years studying the menstrual cycle and reading endless books and papers I feel very disappointed in the education I received on this subject. I am on a mission to help women and all people who menstruate understand what is going on and feel empowered to take control - to know what is usual and what they should not be putting up with, to feel in tune with their bodies and understand how to optimise menstrual health with natural remedies and food, and to know when something is not right and they should visit the doctor.
I suffered from endometriosis for years. The medical advice I received to deal with the pain was to have a baby or a miscarriage (apparently either would work) – I was 16 at the time. I was not actually diagnosed until I was in my 30’s, having been in pain for years. I have lost count of the number of women I have met who think it is normal to suffer during their periods and they just have to put up with it. I want to tell a different story. One where you are listened to. You do not feel hopeless and you do not have to put up with endless pain, heavy bleeding, constant infections or other symptoms that are allegedly a normal part of menstruation. Periods become a normal part of your life rather than interfering with it and you feel in control.
I can help you identify what may be contributing to your symptoms, to understand what is going on and work with you to move towards pain-free and stress-free periods.
As an aromatherapist, herbalist and naturopath I can advise on many natural remedies for the multitude of symptoms that can arise during the menstrual cycle, including perimenopause and menopause.
Issues I can cover as part of your consultation include:

There is an increasing level of support in the workplace for menopause. This is a good thing as it is helpful for everyone to understand what menopause involves and how it may be affecting your colleagues. Many women going through the menopause also find it helpful to understand what is going on and what they can do to help themselves through the transition. However, I think it is also helpful to address the subject of periods more broadly. Hundreds of workdays are lost as a result of problems caused by menstruation. Many of these days are being lost unnecessarily as we are rarely given any training on how to support our menstrual cycle. I offer a number of programmes (from lunch time or evening seminars to more detailed workshops) to help you support the wellness of your employees.

I have had many clients express surprise when we have discussed the fertile stage of their periods. This is obviously a very important phase whether you want to get pregnant or avoid such an outcome, so I thought I would share some information on this.
In order to get pregnant, sperm needs to join with an egg. Many people know that they can get pregnant when they ovulate, which is generally in the middle of your cycle round about day 14. Not so many people know that prior to ovulation your cervix starts to produce mucous that is very sperm friendly. In fact, it is so friendly that it can nourish and house sperm for up to 5-7 days waiting for an egg to be released. This makes the first part of your cycle fairly risky if you are seeking to avoid pregnancy and using a natural form of contraception as some people may be fertile before their period is finished. Why is this?
Menstrual cycles vary in length, but the average cycle is about 28 days with day 1 being the first day of your period. In the first part of your cycle (known as the follicular phase) a follicle is being selected to release an egg and oestrogen levels are rising. If your cycles vary in length (which they often do), it is usually this part of the cycle that is changing as the time post ovulation is generally the same length in time of 10-16 days. If you have a 25 day cycle and ovulate on day 11, you may be producing fertile mucous on day 5 or 6 of your cycle, so intercourse on day 6 could result in a pregnancy on day 11.
After ovulation the follicle that releases the egg will start to produce progesterone, which will change the mucous produced by the cervix and create an environment that is hostile to sperm. An egg will generally not survive for more than 24 hours. If you are trying to become pregnant, the best time to try will be before you ovulate. Do not wait for a temperature rise as this occurs after ovulation (as it is caused by the progesterone). Everyone is different though and tracking will help you work out when you personally are at your most fertile.
